Design Brief

What is the Big Idea?

The app I am planning to build is a task and productivity tracker designed to help busy individuals, particularly college students, balance their daily responsibilities while promoting mental well-being. This app integrates task tracking, personalized reminders, and motivational rewards, ensuring that users stay productive without feeling overwhelmed. Based on our interviews, it became clear that users struggle with staying organized and balancing work with breaks. For instance, James highlighted the difficulty of maintaining momentum, while Pookie Phia mentioned her tendency to overplan and burn out. To address these needs, the app will provide action-oriented reminders (tough love style), customizable rewards (like TV time or small treats), and brain break suggestions (such as short walks or stretching). Additionally, features like visual progress tracking, competitive elements (similar to Apple’s activity rings), and adaptive scheduling will cater to varying user preferences. The app will also allow quick task logging and clear task prioritization to help users stay on top of their academic, personal, and health-related tasks. The goal is to create an app that keeps users motivated and on track without overwhelming them, with a simple and intuitive interface.

Research Approach

Preliminary interviews

Conducted five in-depth interviews with college students to understand their productivity struggles, habits, and motivations.

Interview Development

Created and refined an interview protocol, starting with preliminary research and evolving based on real user insights.

Behavioral Patterns

Used an affinity diagram to identify common themes like motivation challenges, burnout, and the need for structured yet flexible task management.

Competitive Analysis

Researched direct and indirect competitors to pinpoint successful strategies and gaps in existing solutions.

Moving Forward

Moving forward with sketches, sitemaps, A/B testing, and iterative design to ensure the app effectively meets user needs.

Design Tenets

College students are busy and struggle with task consistency

→ Task logging should be quick, easy, and customizable

→ Progress tracking should be automated and visually clear

→ Use familiar design patterns to ensure efficiency and ease of use

Balance productivity and well-being

→ The app should provide motivational yet realistic encouragement

→ Reminders should be adaptive, offering both tough love and gentle nudges

Encourage long-term habit building

→ Show progress on a daily, weekly, and monthly scale

→ Incorporate rewards and competition to maintain engagement

Findings/Recommendations

Based on insights from the five interviews, the app needs to offer strong reminders, customizable rewards, and easy task tracking to cater to different needs. The app should include features like brain breaks, structured task lists, and social or competitive elements (e.g., tracking friends' progress, Apple rings-style competition) to keep users engaged. Tough love reminders will motivate users like James and Conrad, while gentle nudges will better suit Lyssey and Kaykay for their brain breaks. Offering visual progress indicators (e.g., scratch-off mechanics, streaks) and adaptive break suggestions will help prevent burnout, as seen in Lyssey's feedback. The app should also include a simple, non-overwhelming design with customizable scheduling and task prioritization to help users like Pookie Phia and Kaykay manage their routines without feeling overwhelmed. With these features, the app will be versatile and effective for managing academic, personal, and health-
